Youth are better served when their sentencing is done under the jurisdiction of the juvenile courts. Did you know nearly 3/4 of youth behind bars, suffer from mental health issues, according to the National Center for Youth Opportunity and Justice (2020). Untreated mental health issues increases the likelihood of youth of experiencing substance abuse issues, behavioral challenges, homelessness, suicide, and early death.
By addressing mental health issues within the juvenile justice system, youth would have access to the resources needed to find stability. All incoming youth should be screened properly by licensed mental health professionals. The results of these screenings will determine the type and level of care that is needed. By providing appropriate mental health care at the onset of incarceration, youth have a better chance of being treated appropriately and lowering recidivism rates for their age group.
